Hoi Polloi to produce Andrew Lloyd Webber’s CATS

Date: August 21, 2018 Author: Marco Calleja Categories: News

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s and T.S. Elliot’s CATS is being brought to Malta by the local production company Hoi Polloi Theatre Productions and is being directed by Marco Calleja who recently came back from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London where he obtained his Master Of Arts in Advanced Theatre Practice. The Musical Direction for this production is in the hands of Maestro Brian Cefai while Marisha Bonnici has been entrusted with the choreography.  Our CATS performers are currently going through intensive workshops with local and foreign practitioners and we can assure you that you will be entertained by some of the most sought after performers our island has to offer.
CATS will play at the newly refurbished Valletta Campus Theatre (ex MITP ) in Valletta during the last three weekends of February 2019. The long run allows this production to be held in a more intimate space where the audience can appreciate more what goes on in this extremely creative production, from the acting, singing, dancing point of view to the set design, costumes, make-up and hair…giving its audience a close up experience. Cats is a holistic tribute to what musical theatre in general really has to offer.

The West End opened its doors to CATS in 1981 winning the Lawrence Olivier Award for Best New Musical that same year and the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1983. CATS opened on Broadway in 1982. The rest is history as CATS has become one of the longest running shows in the world, being so loved that it staged all over the world and translated into 20 different languages.

The musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles who meet once a year for  a ball. During the Jellicle Ball we get to know (and love) the different characters. The night’s climax happens just before dawn, when every year, one of the cats is chosen for a better life.

Hoi Polloi Theatre Productions is a production company which produces high quality productions, its latest musical being Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat at Mediterranean Conference Centre. Hoi Polloi is also proud to be opening its doors to its creative hub – a space for creative minds to come together later this year.
